The use of dog training pads is very common if you are potty training a puppy or transporting a dog in a crate. They are also used in kennels, so that any mess the dog makes can be absorbed into the mat or pad. The pads are usually disposable, so they can be changed as required.

House breaking a puppy or dog can be a trying time for them and the owner, so being able to quickly and easily get rid of any mess or bad smells will be a welcome bonus.

What is a dog training pad?

Dog training pads usually come in varying sizes, which will be helpful if you only have a puppy. They come in packs, so you will be able to buy several at once (sometimes as many as 56 per pack) and keep a stock of them during the training period. They are backed with a waterproof plastic lining, which helps protect your carpets, furniture and flooring and prevents any extra damage to surfaces or clothing. The pads are also designed to be very strong and resistant to tearing and shredding. We all know that young puppies love to chew and tear away at everything, so this will help too.

The inner part of the potty training pad is designed to do 2 things. Firstly (and most importantly) it is designed to absorb any liquids into it. Because the pads are sealed on all sides and have the plastic backing, no mess will spill out. The mat will be quite comfortable for the dog to lay on after a few minutes as the liquid will have dispersed. Secondly, some of the pads have a special scent embedded in them which helps attract the dog to it, helping with your training regime.

These dog training pads can be used in a variety of situations.

  • Ill dogs. For dogs who are old or unwell, being able to rest on a mat that can cope with an accident will be a good thing, for them and their owners. The pads can be replaced easily and without too much disturbance to the dog too.
  • Puppy Training. House breaking a puppy is not an easy task. There will be messes and accidents until the dog learns where the correct place is to go to the loo. These pads will help the dog to learn where to go if they need the toilet before you have completed your training.
  • Pet carriers. If you are taking your pet on a journey, these pads are excellent to go in the bottom of a crate or cage. They are quick to change and comfortable for the dog to use whilst in transit.
  • Kennels. If your dog is going into a kennel for any reason, it will most likely use one of these pads. I expect kennel owners go through lots of these a week as the dogs are not allowed to roam freely all the time.

So if you are house breaking your new puppy, or caring for an old or ill pet, these pads are a great way to help you not worry too much about the mess they make. They are inexpensive and available from a variety of stockists and pet stores.
